Legal Deposition Transcription

A deposition by definition is evidence that is given under oath and gets recorded for being used in court later on. In the US, depositions are given outside the court in well defined circumstances and are recognized for even criminal cases. Depositions are part of the e discovery process. Legal Deposition summaries can be transcribed within the law firm or the work can be outsourced to professional legal service providers/paralegals located outside. Legal transcription of various deposition summaries are finally done by the transcriptionists by listening to taped recordings/video recordings or from the dictation recordings by lawyers.

Before both the parties (litigants) in any litigation go to trial, they have to prepare and collect relevant information from each other and this process is called e-discovery. During litigation, depositions become one of the most useful tools for any attorney or lawyer.

Here are the different formats of depositions that are sent for transcription;

  • Chart summary deposition
  • Page-by-page deposition
  • Topic summary deposition
  • Customized depositions

Each different style or format has its advantages. In a chart type format the gist of the content is presented in a continuous fashion while the topic summary helps in quick identification of the subject matter.

There are various litigation support companies that offer deposition and court reporting services using state of the art technologies. Real time court reporting and quick transcription work with a minimal turnaround time can make deposition transcripts available in very less time. In the US different states and cities may have different practices with regards to how the transcripts have to be produced.

Lack of witness at trials may frequently require video recordings of depositions to be taken. The attorney who has ordered the deposition starts questioning the deponent, who is notified with a subpoena. The court reporter has to make a verbatim stenographic record of all that is said during the deposition and this is known as direct examination. Sometimes, the legal deposition transcripts offer enough evidence that can lead to a settlement out of court.

Death Touch – Why No Dim Mak Chart?

Recently, I found a chart of Dim Mak (the Death Touch) posted on the Internet. It was posted on one of my affiliate’s sites.

Because this “affiliate” has taken some of my articles and reports without permission, I can only assume that he doesn’t have the right to publish this chart either, but don’t worry. I don’t anyone will be dim makking left and right as a result of that chart.

In good conscience, I can’t post the chart for you. It wouldn’t be right to acknowledge this lack of respect for intellectual property. Besides, I don’t think you need it. Really…
Death Touch Analysis
Do I really think that by taking a little gander at the above mentioned chart the thousands of you who visit the site will be able to kill with a single touch?

Well, do you?

We need to talk more about reality vs. fantasy. Yes, there are elements of truth to Dim Mak. No, you probably won’t gain the expertise you desire by looking at a free chart on the Internet.

[And why do you want to know how to kill with a single touch, anyway?]

The idea of touching someone and then 36 hours later having them collapse from an aneurysm doesn’t do me a bit of good in the heat of a fight.

I need to defend myself right now.

And again, I ask, do you really want to be able to kill someone with a delay move?

Let’s be realistic, there are always consequences to our actions. If you were to perform the Death Touch on someone, you would be legally responsible for killing someone. You’d also have to live with yourself and your actions.

If you really need to kill someone, there are lots of efficient ways that don’t rely on finding a minute point on the body. You see many of these methods “faked” in the movies.

There are ways to take someone out of the picture, immediately — a gun, for example. A strangle hold. A cut of a knife.
But One Touch Is Cool (Impressive)
I am the first to admit, there is a certain attraction to being able to drop someone with a single touch. But there is really no need to kill someone with that touch.

Isn’t it impressive to be able to cause pain with a single touch?

Isn’t it desirable to be able to drop someone to the ground with the pressure of a single finger?

How impressive is it to make attackers completely lose their balance in a fight.

And how necessary, too!

I don’t know about you, but all of the above is much more important to me than being able to cause someone to cease to exist, forever.

This is why I study wrist locks and joint locks. For the control.

More Immediate Concern Than a Death Touch
If I were you, I’d worry much more about someone striking you with a solid, hard-to-defend-against strike.

You may never get a chance to do your secret moves, if you can’t defend against certain hand-to-hand combat attacks.

Should You Be A Legal Nurse Consultant?

As a legal nurse consultant you can make significant money. It is not unheard of to make upwards of $200 an hour. What do you have to do to qualify for this career? First have experience as a registered nurse and then take some training in this particular area. Reading the records of patients they are representing isn’t what most attorneys are good at. This is where the role of a consultant comes into play. The knowledge gap is filled in for the attorney by using one of these professionals. Being expert on a particular subject usually comes from being employed in that area. And being a nursing professional gives the registered nurse the ability to transition into a legal nurse consultant.

The amount of the nation’s lawyers who specialize in medical malpractice law is staggering. Some reports show as many as one in five attorneys specialize in this area. The legal consultant is a must have for these law firms. There are legal consultants everywhere, small and large cities alike. The consultant can be found in just about all areas of the country. So what kinds of cases does the consultant work on? They will work on cases as diverse as slip and fall accidents someone’s grandmother suffered in the hospital, to cases that can involve infection related issues a litigant may have suffered while receiving an operative procedure at an outpatient surgical facility.

This specialized professional can also be employed by government agencies, private corporations, and insurance companies. There are legal nurse consultants that have made a great living by doing nothing more than review charts to look for errors. Charging up to $200 just to look at it. The range of services you can provide as a legal nurse consultant is wide. Interviewing potential expert witnesses for trial to see if they can contribute to the case at hand, researching medical records for problems and determining whether a potential case has merit or not.

The types of nursing consultants that make the most money are those who specialize in being expert witnesses. If you care about fairness and the law, then this may be a great career choice for you. Because as a specialist your knowledge can make or break a case.

Being in this career field ensures you will always have work. There is an ever growing need for the legal nurse consultant to help those who don’t have specialized medical knowledge.

Reading the Small Print on the Snellen Chart

To test the clarity of one’s vision, experts usually use something known as a Snellen chart and you’ve probably seen it at your local eye doctor’s office. This chart is the most commonly used method of measuring how well you can see at what distance. Snellen charts are named after the Dutch ophthalmologist Hermann Snellen who developed the chart in 1862. Scientists now use a variation of this chart, designed by Ian Bailey and Jan Lovie.

The traditional Snellen chart is printed with eleven lines of block letters. The first line has one very large letter, which may be one of several letters, for example E, H, or N. All the rows that follow have increasing numbers of letters that decrease in size. A person taking the test covers one eye (or the doctor covers one eye), and then reads aloud the letters of each row, beginning at the top. The smallest row that can be read accurately indicates the visual acuity in that eye.

The symbols on the chart are formally known as “optotypes” (standard symbols for testing vision). In the case of the traditional Snellen chart, the optotypes appear as block letters, and are intended to be seen and read as letters. They are not, however, letters from any ordinary typographer’s font. They have a particular, simple geometry whereby the thickness of the lines equals the thickness of the white spaces between lines and the thickness of the gap in the letter “C.” In addition, the height and width of the optotype is five times the thickness of the line. Only the letters C, D, E, F, L, N, O, P, T, and Z are used in the traditional Snellen chart.

The smaller letters on the chart are designed to give an accurate measure of how good your vision is. If you notice the big letter this is an excellent sign, because it implies that your overall eye vision is nice and healthy. But the smaller letters are what are used to give an even more accurate picture of how well your eyes are. If you wish to read well in addition to see signs from a far distance then you will need to be in a position to read small letters.

The largest letter on an eye chart often represents an acuity of 20/200 (6/60), the value that is considered “legally blind.” Some individuals with moderate myopia may not be able to read the large E without glasses, but have no problem reading the 20/20 line (line which is supposed to represent a person’s perfect visual ability without eyeglasses at a distance of 20 feet) with glasses. In contrast, people who are legally blind have a visual acuity of 20/200 (6/60) or less when using the best prescription eyeglasses.

When you are exploring the Snellen chart you should not strain your eyes to determine the letters. If you need to strain your eyes to see the letters then chances are how well you see may not be just like you may like it to be.

If you can see all of the letters on the Snellen chart clearly then you can leave your doctor’s office without any problems BUT if you have to struggle to see any of the letters, then you’ll probably end up needing prescription glasses which are made very specifically according to your latest eyeglasses prescription. With these prescription lenses fitted into fashionable eyeglasses frames, you will not only be able to see clearly, but will also be adding a new fashion accessory to your already trendy style.
